This work was created in response to the brief: “On Having an Outside”. As a child I often heard the phrase “children should be seen and not heard” and much of my inner life was quiet and not heard about by anyone. Inspired by the work of Nick Cave, who makes ‘sound suits’ donned by individuals who are then ‘heard and not seen’, I wondered what it would be like to reverse this idea. I made a flamboyant ‘suit’ for an old bathroom cabinet, which also took inspiration from Hundertwasser’s onion domes and windows, which make the piece appear like a building. The items inside represent the quiet and quietening of childhood pastimes. Later, I experimented with adding the sculpture to scenes I photographed in Scotland…
